The March 2024 edition of the Charleston Mercury has a front-page spread “100 Years of the Francis Marion” by Prioleau Alexander. I was unable to go but the crack reporter Caroline Goldsmith was there and sends the following report:

And that dinner was really something! I’ve attached a pic of the menu from last night as well as the menu from 100 years ago when FM opened. Also, a beautiful commemorative ornament that they gave us. The food was delicious- oysters on the half shell and crab legs as appetizers served inside a beautiful ice sculpture during the cocktail hour (with several signature drinks- we avoided the “ankle breaker” and opted instead for the “bees knees”). They showed a slide show during the dinner all about the history of FM and talked about some of the famous people over the years who have stayed here (JFK, Elvis, Doris Day and many others). One of the special guests of the evening was a man named John Cook who had grown up in the orphanage next door in the early days of FM. He said the guests would throw treats and candy out of the windows of the FM for the children in the orphanage to grab. He loved seeing the guests who he said were always so nice to them. They showed pictures of him as a little boy, along with the other boys in the orphanage. John grew up to become an engineer and work for NASA. Lastly, they gave the Conference a big shout out for being the longest consecutively running event at the hotel! Leah has lots of pictures and a video, too.  It was great!

Attached are old FM menus –look how inexpensive everything was back then!
