CONFERENCES, MEETINGS, AND WEBINARS

If you live in or near the Chicago metropolitan area, you’re just a drive or train ride away from SSP’s pre-meeting sessions, to be held on the first day of their 44th Annual Meeting at the Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk Hotel on June 1–3.

Designed for anyone looking for an introduction to the topics below, the sessions are a valuable professional development opportunity, particularly for early-career professionals.

Session 1

Taking the “Fear Factor” Out of Digital Publishing

June 1, 2022 – 8:30–11:30 am CST

Are you an early – or even mid-career publishing professional who has questions about technology?  Do you sometimes struggle with the definition of buzzwords, or what the potential impact of publishing technologies can and should have on your daily life? If so, this session is for you.

Session 2

Introduction to Copyright

June 1, 2022 – 8:30–11:30 am CST

This seminar will introduce attendees to the basic principles of copyright as they apply to scholarly communications while also clearing up common misconceptions. It’s a great way to remember what you’ve forgotten about copyright and to learn what you never knew!

Session 3

Mission and Membership: An Introduction to Society and Association Publishing

June 1, 2022

8:30 am–3:30 pm CST

(Virtual attendance option also available for this session!)

This seminar will provide attendees with a broad overview of society and association publishing, giving them the “quick start” they need to grasp the mission and role of these publishers and their challenges and goals within the broader context of the academic ecosystem. The session program is composed of several “modules” covering the major facets of society and association publishing

Attendees are encouraged but not required to register for the main meeting. All pre-meeting registrants are welcome to attend Wednesday’s keynote address, delivered by Chicago’s own Sherman “Dilla” Thomas, as well as the evening reception immediately following.

Don’t overlook this valuable professional development opportunity! Register now. Bulk registration rates and special rates for librarians are available.

“And, if you are attending the full SSP meeting, be sure to put Session 1F — Charleston Trendspotting Initiative: Forecasting Changes on the Horizon of Scholarly Communication (June 2, 2022, 10:30 am-12:00 pm) on your calendar! Hope to see you there!”

According to Good eReader “… The average amount students spent on course materials, including textbooks and digital materials, for post secondary programs declined 22% during the 2021-2022 academic year according to a new report by independent research firm Student Monitor. Student Monitor conducted one-on-one, hour-long, on campus interviews among 1,412 four-year, full-time undergraduates attending 94 representative colleges and universities...”
