ATG Quirkies: The Book Thing: Baltimore’s free, take-a-book shop

This post in Atlas Obscura notes that while little, free libraries have been popping up in cities across America, as early as 1999 there was a gigantic free library in Baltimore that may have set the mould.

According to the post “the Book Thing of Baltimore is a delightful and anomalous building near Johns Hopkins campus that functions as a free book shop where customers are prohibited from paying a single cent for anything on its shelves.” Staffed totally by volunteers, the Book Thing is open weekends and offers a collection of books and magazines made up of thousands of donations.

As you might expect, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, “the Book Thing is in ‘temporary hibernation.” However, according to the Baltimore Sun, it is still serving the community with monthly giveaways.
