Love in a time of coronavirus…

I guess I am bored like many of us with everything closed and all this cornovavirus business. I don’t mean to make light of it. It’s scary! As I was looking for something to pass the time and take my mind off of the news, I suddenly decided that Rumors needed a BLOG! Let me know what y’all think of this idea and how it develops. Feel free to send me (kstrauch@comcast.net) or Leah Hinds idea snippets or full articles and we will see what happens with the Rumors blog. We will still have Rumors in the printed ATG but the Rumors Blog should be more timely.

Speaking of the print ATG, just this afternoon I got a call from the wonderwoman Toni Nix about the print February issue which as you all know is horribly overdue. She had just gotten a call from the printer in Virginia to say that the paper to print the issue on has not arrived and we had to change the paper or be delayed even more. So we made a quick decision to change the paper! Done! You should get the February issue soon!

Send us your story for the Rumors Blog!  Here’s one! Maddie, Leah’s lovely daughter who used to be a little girl and is now a teenager now has her first job, working in a plant nursery where she helps people decide what to plant and how to take care of things. We told you earlier that Maddie got selected for an agriculture/horticulture internship at NC State last summer!

And to be serious for a minute, here is an article that caught my eye. Is a machine-made post subject to copyright? AI and Copyright – You knew it would happen with all this AI hype. Enter Scholarly Kitchen by the prescient Todd Carpenter. His post is about Artificial Intelligence and Copyright. The copyright office and WIPO hosted a meeting on Copyright in the Age of Artificial Intelligence in early February which included high-powered speakers and panelists to discuss the most pressing questions likely to face IP policy makers about the convergence of AI and intellectual property issues. The copyright Office’s Compendium of U.S.  Copyright Office Practices released on December 22, 2014 states “only works created by a human can be copyrighted under US law which excludes photographs and artwork created by animals or by machines without human intervention.” It can be argued that there is human intervention in the design and algorithms surrounding AI. Based on several cases, “there appears to be a growing divergence in our common law understanding of what a creator is.” To what extent do we want to reward machine creation of ideas in comparison with traditional human creation? Is the act of curation copyrightable?
