ATG Star of the Week: Missy Laytham, Head of Acquisitions, Loyola/Notre Dame Library

by | Aug 7, 2014 | 0 comments

MissyLName: Missy Laytham
Title: Head of Acquisitions
Email: [email protected]
Organization: Loyola/Notre Dame Library
Website (Personal or Professional): http://www.loyola.edu/library/indexl.htm

Born and Lived: I was born in Maryland and have lived in ten states, some of them twice.  They are Maryland, Mississippi, Tennessee, Arkansas, Colorado, Texas, Kansas, Missouri, North Carolina, and Illinois.  We have no family in North Carolina, but consider that “home.”

Professional Career and Activities: I obtained my library degree from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1998.  I worked part-time through most of the 2000s, which is when I discovered my preference for technical services work.  Before leaving Illinois in 2012, I was active in CARLI (Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois) and in LIBRAS, a consortium of private academic libraries in the greater Chicago area.  Loyola/Notre Dame Library in Baltimore is the first 501(c)(3) academic library in which I have worked.  We have an independent board of directors and budget, and we support the teaching and research needs of two universities.

Family: I have been married for 30 years.  My husband is both an academic and clergy.  We have one daughter and one son.  Our daughter graduated from college with a music degree in 2013 and enjoys performing in house concerts.  Our son is a senior at Davidson College in North Carolina.

In My Spare Time: I enjoy running (slowly), raking leaves, holding babies, and watching movies.

Favorite Books: I like historical fiction and a good biography such as Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks.

Pet Peeves: When people take my pen.

Philosophy: “Do all the good you can. By all the means you can. In all the ways you can. In all the places you can. At all the times you can. To all the people you can. As long as ever you can.” ― John Wesley

Most Memorable Career Achievement: Working with a colleague this past year to develop an enhanced liaison program. We launch the new program this fall 2014, with a special focus on new faculty.

Goal I Hope to Achieve Five Years from Now: To have contributed to building a strong and stable library staff following the turnover and retirement of about 10% of the current library staff.

How/Where Do I See the Industry in Five Years: I think we will continue to face economic challenges, constant change in technology, and a heavy strain on staff to meet the teaching and research needs of our academic institutions.  I hope we will have found avenues to obtain needed resources without having to buy bundles of materials that we don’t want or need.
