Born and Lived: I was born in 1983 in Austinburg, Ohio. I lived in Columbus, Ohio, while an undergraduate at the Ohio State University, and I currently live in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where I have been since I started graduate school at the University of Pittsburgh.

Professional Career and Activities: I work primarily in the journal publishing arm of the Office of Scholarly Communication and Publishing, University Library System, University of Pittsburgh. We publish 37 online journals edited by scholars both at Pitt and in the global community, and 34 of these journals are Open Access. We also run the Scholarly Exchange® hosting service which provides the Open Journal Systems platform to scholars around the world. My duties include training our publishing partners to use our software, technical support, indexing and promotion, social media, finances, and outreach for our open access mission. I also participate in our Plum Analytics altmetrics pilot program.

I have a Ph.D. in linguistics and am also an active scholar in the fields of computer-mediated communication, digital games studies, and semiotics. My research focuses on multimodal communication and how it shapes our performances of identities and relationships.

Family: I live with my husband and his three children and a pride of domesticated felines.

In My Spare Time: I am a musician in my spare time — I play tenor and bass trombone for a local wind symphony and occasionally in the pit orchestra for musicals or in a big band. I am also an avid gamer and love to travel.

Favorite Books: Robert Heinlein’s “Stranger in a Strange Land”, Walter M. Miller’s “A Canticle for Leibowitz”, and these days anything I can get my hands on by N.K. Jemisin, Scott Lynch, or John Scalzi.

Pet Peeves: Apostrophes used in plural word’s… oops.

Philosophy: “You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here.” -Max Ehrmann

Most Memorable Career Achievement: My career in library publishing is young (I have only been at it since February of 2013), but one of the highlights so far was being part of the SPARC2014 conference and meeting so many amazing people and being part of a starting group for an Open Access Pledge.

Goal I Hope to Achieve Five Years from Now: -Our institution to have implemented an open access mandate.

-Helping to get our institutional repository integrated into the scholarly workflow at Pitt, with scholars depositing and sharing their works as a regular part of their scholarly activities – complete with altmetrics tracking, of course!

How/Where Do I See the Industry in Five Years: I see Open Access publishing becoming the norm rather than a fringe practice, especially with new government mandates and the increasing adoption of institution-wide open access policies. I also see libraries increasing their publishing practices to cater to the needs of their institutions and continuing to lead digital innovations in scholarly publishing.
